Oscar Esplá Concert: From Tradition to Modernity
As part of Alicante’s chamber music season, a special concert celebrates the legacy of Oscar Esplá (1886–1976), the pioneering Spanish composer whose work bridges Andalusian folk roots and early 20th-century European modernism. The programme features his beloved Serenade for String Quartet, Five Piano Pieces in a newly commissioned chamber arrangement, and the world premiere of a reimagined version of Cantos populares españoles, co-produced by Ensemble Mediterráneo. Doors open one hour prior at 7:00 PM, with free access to the introductory exhibition Esplá and the Mediterranean, exploring his deep ties to Valencia, Alicante, and Barcelona. This is more than a concert — it’s a living dialogue between Spain’s musical heritage and its contemporary voice.
Don’t miss: A rare chance to hear seldom-performed works by one of Spain’s most influential yet internationally under-recognized composers — performed in the historic Auditorio de Alicante, where Esplá himself gave a landmark recital in 1927.
