Join an engaging lecture as part of the "Discovering Alicante: Spaces and Memory" cultural cycle — a project dedicated to preserving and celebrating the city’s living heritage. On Thursday, 12 November 2026 at 7:30 pm, the Centro Municipal de las Artes (Plaza de Quijano, 2) hosts the talk "Municipal Markets and the Central Market of Alicante".
Led by historian Alfredo Campello Quereda, the lecture traces the evolution of Alicante’s markets from their 19th-century origins to today’s iconic Central Market — a modernist landmark inaugurated in 1918 and meticulously restored in 2022. You’ll explore not only architectural transformations but also the social heartbeat of these spaces: how markets shaped daily life, empowered local vendors (especially women), served as civic forums, and anchored community identity across generations.
Expect insights into changing food cultures, urban planning decisions, and the enduring role of the Central Market as both economic hub and emotional landmark. The 90-minute session includes time for Q&A. Please arrive by 7:20 pm for registration. Free admission, but advance booking is required — invitations open two weeks prior, with a limit of two slots per email address. Kindly cancel if plans change, as no-shows without justification will be excluded from future cycle events.
