Pyotr Tchaikovsky's *Swan Lake* is the quintessential masterpiece of universal classical ballet and the highest expression of the Russian school of dance. Premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, *Swan Lake* is the most performed work in dance history. Its story traverses the full range of human emotions, unfolding between love and magic, the eternal struggle between good and evil.
Prince Siegfried learns he must choose a wife at the upcoming ball. In a forest near the shore of a mysterious lake, he becomes enchanted by the beauty of Princess Odette, who is cursed by a powerful and evil sorcerer, Rothbart: by day a swan, by night a human. The curse can only be broken by the arrival of true love.
