The Unloved One — Jacinto Benavente

At Esteban and Raimunda’s summer estate, Acacia’s engagement to Faustino is celebrated. After her husband’s death, Raimunda married Esteban — a man hated by her stepdaughter. Tragedy looms when the groom is murdered on the night of the engagement. The sons of Uncle Eusebio — father of the slain man — accuse Raimunda’s nephew, who had once been Acacia’s first suitor. Yet others in the village know he is innocent.

A popular couplet begins circulating through the streets: "Whoever loves the girl from Soto… suffers for it all his life. For loving her as he does, they call her… The Unloved One."

The net tightens, and hidden, forbidden desires begin to surface. Rubio — the estate’s foreman — fans the rivalries between families.

Determined to uncover the truth, Raimunda will not rest until she finds that light which, like fire, consumes all her dreams.
