Madama Butterfly — Giacomo Puccini

Tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio-San, a fifteen-year-old Japanese geisha who marries Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, a U.S. Navy officer. While she devotes herself faithfully to him—believing in true love and renouncing her own culture—he regards their marriage as a temporary pastime. Pinkerton departs Japan, and years later returns with an American wife—leading Butterfly to commit suicide after losing her son.
