The Broken Woman — Simone de Beauvoir

New Year's Eve. Murielle is at home, alone. The noises from the street and the shouts of her neighbours celebrating keep her from falling asleep. In this sleepless vigil, memories confront a desolate present and an even less promising future. What was lost, what was taken away, failure and loneliness have left her adrift, wandering in a limbo where she still struggles between survival and death. Her true tragedy — which is also a comedy — has shattered her self-esteem as a woman, as a wife, as a mother, and as a daughter.
