Chouspeare: To Laugh or Not to Laugh
‘Chouspeare: To Laugh or Not to Laugh’ is a bold, irreverent, and wildly entertaining solo comedy show by acclaimed Spanish humorist Javi Chou — reimagining Shakespeare’s timeless stories through the lens of modern life: social media anxiety, dysfunctional family dinners, workplace absurdity, and existential dread disguised as WhatsApp status updates. No prior knowledge of Shakespeare required — just an open mind and a readiness to laugh at ourselves.
Javi Chou, a regular at festivals like Madrid Comedy Festival and Humor en la Plaza, masterfully blends physical comedy, sharp satire, and spontaneous audience interaction. In this show, he transforms into multiple characters — a burnout Hamlet scrolling TikTok in Elsinore Castle, a podcasting Ophelia offering ‘mental wellness tips’, and a hilariously exasperated Polonius giving life advice via voice note. The iconic line ‘To be or not to be?’ gets a refreshingly Iberian twist — one that involves tapas, bureaucracy, and a very relatable midlife crisis.
The performance takes place at Teatro Corfú 7, a beloved independent venue in Alicante known for its warm atmosphere, intimate staging, and commitment to innovative, audience-driven theatre. Tickets cost €15 (available at the box office or online). Come for Shakespeare — stay for the laughter, surprises, and the joyful realization that tragedy and comedy have always been two sides of the same coin.
