It portrays the difficulties faced by a flower seller trying to belong to a social status that is out of her reach, despite being educated and cultured, yet a working woman—a trait frowned upon in that era. The story unfolds during the time of the Second Spanish Republic, a period of social upheaval clearly reflected in the narrative. Musically, the work incorporates new rhythms such as the fox-trot, resulting in a score rich in nuance, color, and emotion.
