Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante

Santa Bárbara Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks of Alicante and one of the best-preserved medieval castles on Spain's eastern coast. Perched atop Mount Benacantil at around 166 meters above sea level, it dominates the city and the bay. Thanks to its strategic location, the castle served for centuries as a key defensive point, controlling both maritime and land routes in the region.

The castle's history dates back to antiquity: Phoenicians and Romans already used this hill as an observation post. However, the main structure, as we know it today, was built in the 9th century during Muslim rule in Al-Andalus. It was then known as the fortress of Akaba and formed part of an extensive defensive system. After the Reconquista in 1248, Christian troops led by King Alfonso X the Wise captured the fortress and renamed it in honor of Saint Barbara, patron saint against sudden death—especially by lightning—a name symbolic for a castle perched high on a mountain.

Over the centuries, the castle was rebuilt and reinforced several times. It was particularly active during the Middle Ages and early Modern Era. In the 16th century, following the destructive earthquake of 1364 and pirate attacks, strong bastions and new defenses were constructed. By the 18th century, the castle had become a military prison, and in the 19th century began to decline. Only in 1963 did it pass into municipal ownership, marking the beginning of its restoration as a historical and cultural site.

Today, Santa Bárbara Castle is not only an architectural monument but also a major tourist attraction. Visitors can climb up via a scenic path or use an elevator installed inside Mount Benacantil. Inside, there are multiple levels with remains of medieval halls, chapels, wine cellars, and even prison cells. The castle also houses the Archaeological Museum and a panoramic terrace offering stunning views of the city, sea, and nearby mountains.

One of the most intriguing legends associated with the castle tells of a prisoner who carved an exact copy of the key out of soap and managed to escape. It is also said that the name of Mount Benacantil comes from the Arabic expression "Bani Kantil," meaning "children of Kantil," though locals jokingly translate it as "Veo Cantil" ("I see" in Spanish and "Cantil"), referring to the spectacular view from the summit.
