Gran Teatro de Elche is the main performance venue in the city of Elche (Alicante province, Valencia Community). It is a modern theatre and one of the most advanced on the Costa Blanca.

Brief history

Before 1996, Elche did not have its own major theatre. All large-scale performances and concerts were held in temporary venues or open-air locations. Construction of Gran Teatro began in the 1990s, designed by architect Juan Antonio GarcĂ­a Solera, as part of a comprehensive cultural infrastructure renewal program. The theatre opened in 1996 with a performance of "Don Juan Tenorio".

Contemporary significance

Today, Gran Teatro de Elche is:

  • The main venue for the annual International Festival of Independent Theatre, Escena d’Elx
  • A host for opera and ballet seasons (welcoming companies from Madrid, Barcelona, St. Petersburg, Moscow, etc.)
  • Home to the Elche Symphony Orchestra and local choirs
  • A regular stop for touring productions by major Spanish theatre companies (Centro Dramático Nacional, Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, etc.)
