Road Closures in Marbella Due to IRONMAN 2025: Chaos Expected on Costa del Sol Routes November 8–9
Marbella, November 7, 2025 — The city of Marbella and surrounding areas of the Costa del Sol are preparing for a major sporting event: this weekend, November 8–9, the legendary IRONMAN 2025 will take place. Thousands of athletes from around the world will take part in the triathlon, which includes swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, a cycling stage, and a marathon run. However, for local residents and tourists, this means one thing — temporary closures of key roads to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
Event organizers, in partnership with Andalusian authorities and the Marbella municipality, have announced a detailed plan for road restrictions. On Saturday, November 8, the swim segment will begin at 6:00 AM at Cabopino Beach, followed by bicycle route blockages from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The main affected roads are the A-7 (Mediterranean coastal highway), and regional roads N-340 and A-355, connecting Marbella with Estepona and Malaga. Full closures will affect approximately 20 km of the route — from Puerto Banús to the junction with the road to Ojén.
On Sunday, November 9, the focus shifts to the running segment. From 7:00 AM, central Marbella will be closed — including Avenida Ricardo Soriano, Paseo de la Alameda, and surrounding alleys near the old town. Cycling routes will remain restricted until 4:00 PM, while the run segment will conclude with a finish on the promenade around 6:00 PM. Peak congestion is expected in the morning, with traffic jams stretching up to 10–15 km in both directions from the start zone.
"We understand the inconvenience for residents, but safety comes first. IRONMAN attracts over 2,500 athletes and 50,000 spectators, making it one of the largest events of the year in Europe," said Marbella mayor Ángel Muñoz. Authorities recommend using public transportation: special shuttle buses will operate from parking areas in San Pedro de Alcántara and from Malaga Airport. An alternative is rerouting via the inland AP-7 motorway, though delays may still occur.
