Hogueras de San Juan 2026 in Alicante.

Las Hogueras de San Juan (in Valencian: Les Fogueres de Sant Joan) is Alicante’s most important festival, officially declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. In 2026, the main festivities take place from 20 to 24 June. It is a vibrant fusion of art, fire, music, tradition, and pyrotechnics, held in honour of Saint John’s Day (equivalent to the folk celebration of Ivan Kupala).

When the monuments are burned (La CremĂ )

The climax of the festival is Nit de la Cremà (The Night of the Burning) at 00:00 on 24 June (technically the night of 24–25 June).

  • At exactly midnight, the spectacular “Palmera” — a massive white palm-shaped firework — is launched from Mount Benacantil (home to Santa Bárbara Castle), signalling the start of the burnings.
  • The first monument to be lit is the official hoguera on Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square), set alight by the Bellea del Foc (Queen of Fire) from the City Hall balcony.
  • Then, across the city, dozens of large and children’s monuments ignite simultaneously in each fogueril district, burning throughout the night.

After la cremĂ , the traditional banyĂ  takes place: firefighters spray spectators with water to cool them down.

Where to watch and where the monuments are located

Hogueras — satirical, towering sculptures (up to 12–15 m tall) made of wood, cardboard, and cork — are installed throughout Alicante. They are erected on 20 June (La Plantà).

The most impressive belong to the Especial category. Key locations (most relevant for tourists) include:

  • Plaza del Ayuntamiento — official hoguera.
  • Port d’Alacant (port district).
  • Florida – Portazgo (winner of the 1st Especial prize in 2026).
  • DiputaciĂł – Renfe.
  • Sèneca – Autobusos.
  • Explanada, Calvo Sotelo, La CerĂ mica, PolĂgono de San Blas, Carolinas Altas, Sagrada Familia, and others.

Over 100 hogueras of various categories are displayed across the city. Walking through the historic centre is ideal; alternatively, use the free shuttle bus connecting major Especial sites (schedule available on the official website or FoguerApp).

Practical tips for visitors in 2026

  • MascletĂ s: daily at 14:00 on Plaza de los Luceros (extremely loud — earplugs recommended).
  • Festivities continue after 24 June: an international fireworks competition takes place on Postiguet / CocĂł beach from 25 to 29 June.
  • Download the official app or consult hogueras.com and alicanteturismo.com for real-time maps and schedules.
  • Book accommodation and restaurant tables well in advance — the city fills up completely.

Las Hogueras de San Juan is far more than just burning effigies — it is a powerful symbol of purification, summer, and communal unity. In 2026, Alicante will once again transform into one grand celebration of fire, colour, and emotion.

Planning a visit? Arrive between 20–24 June — and stay for la cremà. An unforgettable spectacle awaits!
