Proyección y coloquio: High Fantasy (Jenna Cato, 2017)

Join us for a screening and live discussion of High Fantasy (2017), Jenna Cato Bass’s sharp, genre-bending satire that uses body-swapping as a bold lens to examine class, gender, and race in contemporary South Africa. Four young friends head into the remote Karoo desert for a camping trip—only to wake up the next morning in each other’s bodies. What follows is a politically charged, emotionally intimate labyrinth where identity becomes both battleground and revelation.

Shot in the fragmented, confessional style of reality TV, the film treats the body not as private terrain but as contested political ground. Its incisive storytelling earned international acclaim: nominated for the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival (2018) and winner of the Artistic Bravery Award at the Durban International Film Festival (2018).

Following the screening, engage in a dynamic dialogue with two distinguished guests:

🔹 Gabriella Nuru, sociologist, cultural manager, poet, and co-founder of the Afro collective Uhuru Valencia, who will guide reflections on identity, racism, and representation;

🔹 Salym Fayad, founder of MUICA (Itinerant African Film Showcase in Colombia) and Wallay Barcelona African Film Festival, curator and documentary photographer based in Johannesburg since 2008 — offering on-the-ground insights into South Africa’s evolving social and cultural landscape (online).

This event is part of the Shakara Fáyé 2026 cycle, co-organized by Solidaridad Internacional País Valenciano and Tren al Sur, with funding from the Alicante City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana. Free admission — registration recommended.
