Excursión ornitológica gratuita: observa el anillamiento científico de aves en el Parque La Marjal

On Sunday, 8 November 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00, join a unique free nature experience at La Marjal Park in Alicante — observe professional ornithologists in action during scientific bird ringing. This is more than a walk: it’s a rare glimpse into conservation science and urban biodiversity research.

You’ll watch how trained experts carefully capture birds in mist nets, identify species, take precise biometric measurements, and fit lightweight, numbered aluminium rings — all without causing stress or harm. Birds are released immediately back into the wild. These rings serve as vital tools: when recaptured or found later, they reveal migration routes, lifespans, population trends, and the ecological importance of urban wetlands like La Marjal.

The tour also includes an informative walk through the park, highlighting its rich flora and fauna — including the little egret (Egretta garzetta), common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), and multiple swallow species. Since 2018, this collaborative project by Aguas de Alicante and Alicante City Council has recorded over 100 bird species in the park, ringed more than 40 species, and fitted over 1,200 individual birds.

Important note: This is an observational event — not a hands-on activity. Handling, ringing, or releasing birds is strictly reserved for licensed ornithologists with official permits.

Meet at 09:45 at the main viewpoint near the roundabout on Avenida de las Naciones. Free entry — but places are limited to just 50 participants. Advance registration required: https://www.fundacionaquae.org/encuentros-la-marjal/

La Marjal is thoughtfully divided into two zones: one open to bikes, scooters, and dogs; the other a quiet, protected area with ponds, native plants, and floral pathways. Don’t miss this serene, biodiverse gem on the edge of Playa de San Juan.
