Pedro Sánchez Strongly Condemns US and Israeli Strikes on Iran
Madrid, 2 March 2026 — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez openly criticized the joint US–Israeli military operation against Iran, launched on 28 February. The strikes resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as several high-ranking military officers and officials.
“We reject the unilateral military actions by the United States and Israel, which constitute escalation and contribute to a more uncertain and hostile international order,” Sánchez wrote on his official X account.
At the same time, the head of the Spanish government emphasized that he also condemns the actions of the Iranian regime, including those of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He called on all parties to immediately de-escalate, fully respect international law, and return to dialogue. “Violence must not be answered with greater violence—it will only lead to further casualties and instability,” Sánchez stated, notably during remarks at the Goya Awards ceremony.
Spain became one of the few European countries—and the only NATO member—to issue such a firm condemnation of the operation. Most European leaders limited their responses to calls for restraint and protection of civilians. Madrid’s position reflects the Spanish government’s consistent foreign policy stance: support for the Palestinian cause, recognition of the State of Palestine in 2024, and criticism of unilateral military interventions in the Middle East.
The conflict escalated rapidly: Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes against US bases in the Persian Gulf region, Israel, and other targets. The situation remains extremely tense, with significant risk of further expansion of hostilities.
