Fire at La Villa Joyosa hospital expansion site: situation under control, no injuries

La Villa Joyosa (Alicante), November 13, 2025, 14:30 — On Thursday morning, a fire broke out in the basement of the new wing under construction at Hospital de la Marina Baixa. The incident occurred around 9:13 local time and produced a dense column of smoke visible from various parts of the province.

What happened

• Location: underground level of the hospital’s expansion zone (ampliación).
• Cause: preliminary indications point to an electrical short circuit or ignition of construction materials (investigation ongoing).
• Consequences:
• flames did not reach the main building;
• no injuries reported;
• access to the emergency area remains temporarily restricted only within the construction site.

Emergency response

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Alicante. Several teams responded, including specialized equipment for high-rise operations.

"The situation is fully under control. Patients and staff were unharmed," said a fire department spokesperson.

They arrived to assess damage and coordinate recovery efforts.

Acting President of Valencia, Carlos Mazón, posted on X:

Context

The expansion of Hospital de la Marina Baixa is one of the region's largest infrastructure projects. The new wing will increase emergency room capacity and add modern operating rooms.
