Revolutionary blood test for cancer developed in Spain
November 04, 2025
A new test developed in Spain can detect cancer from a single drop of blood.
Spanish scientist Laura Lechuga from the Institute of Nanoscience ICN2 (Barcelona) has created a biosensor capable of detecting cancer at an early stage using just one drop of blood.
The device works similarly to a glucose meter: a simple finger prick, and the sensor identifies biomarkers associated with tumours. In trials involving 40 patients, the test demonstrated nearly 100% accuracy.
According to Lechuga, the technology is fully ready, but financial and regulatory barriers are delaying mass implementation—investment and EU certification are needed. "If such a test had existed earlier, thousands of lives could have been saved," says the scientist.
