Alicante Offers Over 9,200 Slots for Sports Activities for Children and Youth

November 03, 2025

During the 2024-25 academic year, more than 9,200 slots were offered in Alicante through School Sports programs and local sports schools. The focus has been on increasing access to sports for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, while also promoting lesser-known sports and supporting nonprofit local sports organizations.

According to municipal data, over 3,500 students from 305 teams participated across ten disciplines such as futsal, basketball, volleyball, and handball, with a total of 1,772 matches held throughout the year. Manuel Villar, the city’s sports councillor, emphasized the importance of sports schools that help promote participation among minors and provide opportunities to less privileged groups.

Among key events were a half marathon attended by 5,500 athletes, the Survivor endurance race with 4,425 participants, and other charitable runs. Looking ahead to 2026, major highlights include the final phase of Spain’s Handball Cup, the National Artistic Swimming Championship, the Challenger Montemar tennis tournament, and the second edition of the Elche-Alicante International Marathon.
