Rain and Wind Front Hits Alicante: AEMET Issues Yellow Coastal Warning
Alicante, March 2, 2026 — A period of atmospheric instability has begun in the province of Alicante: an Atlantic front combined with easterly-northeasterly winds brings cloud cover, rain, and strong winds. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated a yellow warning (alerta amarilla) for coastal phenomena along the southern coast of the province—including Alicante, Torrevieja, Orihuela, and surrounding areas—starting at 18:00 on March 2.
Forecasts indicate very cloudy skies with airborne dust (calima) this morning and afternoon. Rainfall is expected to be light and scattered across most areas, but more noticeable and persistent in the northern part of the province (Jávea, Dénia, Benidorm, Altea). In the afternoon, the probability of rain rises to 70–80%, with isolated thunderstorms and muddy rain (lluvia de barro) possible due to Saharan dust advection.
"In northern Alicante and southern Valencia, rainfall may be locally persistent, whereas in southern areas of the province (Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja), precipitation will remain light and sporadic. Strong onshore winds will heighten sea agitation—wave heights up to 2–3 meters," explained AEMET.
Temperatures: daytime highs of 16–18 °C, nighttime lows of 9–11 °C—noticeably cooler than late February. Winds are northeasterly, with gusts reaching 50–70 km/h along the coast and in mountainous zones.
Instability will persist over the coming days (March 3–5): heavier rainfall is possible, particularly if a cold drop (DANA) approaches the eastern coast. Forecast models suggest accumulated rainfall of 20–50 mm over several days in localized zones of the province, raising the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and on roads.
Residents and tourists in Alicante are advised to:
- Avoid non-essential travel along the coast during windy conditions.
- Exercise caution on beaches and promenades due to high waves.
- Monitor updated warnings via the AEMET website and mobile app.
- Prepare for muddy rain—vehicles and clothing may become soiled quickly.
March 2026 weather is expected to be wetter than average—a return to typical spring variability after a dry February.
